Program Structure
Foundation Year
The KGSP Foundation Year occurs prior to undergraduate acceptance and is hosted at one of several renowned universities throughout the United States. Uniquely designed by the Program, Foundation Year is structured to meet two goals: First, it prepares students for the academic challenge of undergraduate study through university-level coursework in science, math, and writing. Secondly, Foundation Year supports students in the preparation and submission of competitive undergraduate applications to gain admission to top U.S. universities.
Most KGSP students enter undergraduate programs following a Foundation Year.* Students pursue Bachelor of Science degrees within an academic major that prepares them for a corresponding KAUST field of study. Upon completion of the undergraduate degree, KGSP students apply for immediate matriculation to a KAUST graduate degree program. Successful applicants will receive a competitive fellowship to complete their graduate work at KAUST.
*Students admitted to the KGSP who have already received full admission to a KGSP-approved university are not eligible for a Foundation Year and will enter the Program directly as undergraduates.
All KGSP students are expected to participate annually in a short mid-year enrichment opportunity and a longer summer enrichment program, the breadth of which increases as students advance. Short-term opportunities may include seminars, workshops, trainings, or academic conferences. Summer enrichment is more intensive, as underclassmen focus on developing skills through research internships at their home universities, or with KGSP-arranged research programs at a host institution. Upperclassmen undertake research assignments on the KAUST campus working alongside KAUST faculty and graduate students, or participate in competitive industrial internships.
