Boston University senior Zainab Alalawi, who is studying Biomedical Engineering, was selected as a 2026 Rhodes Scholar Finalist, known internationally as the most prestigious and oldest global scholarship for post-graduate studies atOxford University. Since the Rhodes Scholarship was established in Saudi Arabia in 2018, it has become an additional pathway for outstanding students across the Kingdom to use their talents to achieve its Vision 2030 goals.
After successfully making it through the application stage, Zainab was invited to interview in
Riyadh this November, a privilege awarded to a small number of applicants. Being selected as a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship is an incredible accomplishment and Zainab has graciously shared her inspiration and experience during the selection process with the KGSP community.
What inspired you to pursue the Rhodes Scholarship?
The Rhodes Scholarship resonated with me because it celebrates diversity and authenticity, encouraging scholars to bring their full, genuine selves to their work. Several Scholars who are KGSP alumni have painted a beautiful and compelling picture of what it means to be part of the Rhodes community, describing the Rhodes House as a place of growth and shared purpose.
How has your experience as a KGSP student shaped your goals, including being a Rhodes Scholar applicant?
KGSP consistently pushes students toward new experiences that lead to meaningful self-discovery. Through its emphasis on on-campus involvement and summer enrichment opportunities, the program encourages us to expand our horizons by engaging with the world around us. These experiences have helped me better understand global challenges, clarify the issues I am passionate about, and strengthen my commitment to contributing to solutions. This journey of exploration and purpose is what ultimately inspired me to pursue the Rhodes Scholarship.
Who or what has been the biggest influence on your journey so far?
The biggest influence on my journey has been the people who encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone. My mentors, professors, and fellow KGSP students and alumni believed in my potential even before I recognized it myself. Their support and guidance have encouraged me to pursue opportunities that align with my values, including applying for the Rhodes Scholarship.
What challenges did you face along the way, and how did you overcome them?
The biggest challenge I faced was staying flexible. Classes can be hectic, and balancing them with personal projects, leadership positions, and new opportunities can easily become overwhelming. I learned that the best way to manage everything is to stay on top of my schedule, treat it as a work in progress, and embrace the last-minute changes rather than shy away from them.
What academic or research experiences have been most meaningful to you?
One of the most meaningful academic experiences I have had was my internship at KAUST. It gave me a clearer picture of what a future as a researcher could look like and exposed me to the real challenges that come with pursuing research. Professor Tzavaras’s group was a perfect example of the kind of collaborative environment I hope to be part of in the future.
How have your leadership roles or community involvement contributed to your growth?
One of the most valuable aspects of being involved in my community at Boston University has been the opportunity to hear people’s stories and learn about their diverse backgrounds. As a student advisor, I wanted to make sure my fellow students found a place for themselves and felt welcomed at the university, no matter what their background was. This exposure helped me develop a more well-rounded understanding of the world and made me more conscious of global issues. It also strengthened my sense of responsibility as an active community member, reinforcing the principle that “if you see something, say something.”
The Rhodes Scholarship emphasizes leadership and service—how do these values resonate with you?
The Rhodes Scholarship appealed to me because of its commitment to community service and leadership. I believe that true leadership lies in serving others. It is more than a title or a badge of honor; it stems from our dedication to improving and uplifting the communities around us.
If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self: keep going! Continue doing what you enjoy and stay true to your values. Do not try to shape your life to fit anyone else’s expectations. Focus on your personal and academic growth and trust the path you are creating for yourself.
What advice would you give to future KGSP students interested in applying for the Rhodes Scholarship?
Tell your story as it is and be proud of every achievement, no matter how small. Every experience, whether in academics, leadership, community service, or personal challenges, shows who you are and what you value. Have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish after completing your postgraduate studies and how it aligns with your personal beliefs and values. The Rhodes Scholarship seeks people committed to making a difference, so focus on sharing your unique journey and the impact you have made and hope to make in the world.
