Summer Internship Highlights: KGSP Students at Aramco

This summer, KGSP students completed enrichment activities including internships, research, fellowships, and academic coursework to build skills in a diverse range of experiences. The KGSP facilitates valuable experiences for students to develop and apply their skills outside the classroom by building relationships with academic, corporate, and research institutions. At Aramco Americas, KGSP students spent the summer interning with research and development teams at the Houston, Texas and Cambridge, Massachusetts locations learning from experts in the world’s leading energy company, and applying skills taught in the classroom to real-world problems.

Taha Alnasser, a junior at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities majoring in Computer Science, worked as a Robotics Process Automation (RBA) intern at Aramco. Taha’s responsibilities included collaborating with the IT and Procurement and Supply Chain departments in identifying areas where automation could streamline processes. “I developed and implemented RPA solutions to automate data extraction and reporting tasks from the SAP ERP system, reducing the daily manual workload of Procurement Managers,” Taha said. “Additionally, I was involved in creating dynamic Power BI dashboards to visually represent data insights, enhancing decision-making processes within the company.” Taha was drawn to Aramco due to its global reputation and looked forward to working in a dynamic and diverse international environment. He also added that the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals and work on impactful RPA projects were significant motivators for him in pursuing this internship experience.

Enrichment experience like these provide students the opportunity to apply learned skills from the classroom to real world applications, and students leave experience better equipped with the knowledge and skillsets to become leading experts in their desired fields. For Taha, interning at Aramco has been pivotal in aligning his academic knowledge with practical real-world applications, and has enriched his problem-solving skills and ability to work across diverse teams. “One of my biggest takeaways from this internship was the importance of cross-departmental collaboration in driving digital transformation,” Taha noted, adding that “engaging with professionals from both IT and supply chain backgrounds taught me the value of diverse perspectives in creating effective solutions. The hands-on experience with SAP ERP and Python programming has significantly enhanced my technical skills and boosted my confidence in handling complex projects.” Taha’s contribution to a project that saved the company two hours of work through automation, “demonstrated the tangible impact of my work but also reinforced my interest in pursuing a career where I can contribute to technological advancements and efficiency improvements.”

Mustafa Aleid

Mustafa Aleid, a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in Geology and Geophysics, also worked at the Aramco Research Center as a Geological Resources intern. Mustafa’s work on source rocks characterization included capturing and analyzing images using microscopes, and processing that data to contribute to ongoing research projects. Like Taha, Aramco’s global reputation fueled Mustafa’s interest in the company. “The internship has significantly advanced my academic and professional goals by deepening my understanding of geological concepts and their practical applications, exposing me to industry-standard tools and technologies, and helping me build a professional network,” Mustafa said. “I learned advanced techniques in optical characterization and geological data analysis, emphasizing the importance of staying informed about industry trends and adaptability.”

Industry experiences like these offer students insight to the multitude of opportunities available to apply their academic studies. In addition to the hands-on experience, students gain invaluable knowledge in interdisciplinary learning and research, communication, and collaboration.
